With eleven years’ experience within the flooring industry, we wanted to catch up with Anthony Bonini and hear how he came to pursue a successful career within the flooring industry.
Anthony is based at The Gallery Clerkenwell and is part of the IVC Commercial team. His client facing role means that he is often first to understand the challenges that the A&D sector face and to provide the relevant flooring solutions.
Tell us about yourself?
Where do I start! Well as you know I’ve been in the industry since leaving university, but it hasn’t all been flooring. I’m a football fan and support Spurs (for my sins), and have a love of history, particularly Roman and WW2. This interest started when I was at school, but I continue to love learning about these eras. You only have to look around at the district of Clerkenwell to see that it has many layers of architecture and history, and I’m sure there’s a few hidden Roman gems amongst them.
How long have you been part of the IVC Commercial team and what are the best aspects of your role?
I’ve been with IVC Commercial for over two and half years now and bring with me a strong understanding of the challenges and demands of flooring. For me, meeting existing and new clients and being able to advise them on the best solutions for their projects is really rewarding. Another positive is that we have quite a tight-knit team, which makes it great for bouncing off ideas.
You’ve spent over eleven years within the A&D sector, how did your journey start?
It was more by chance than conscious decision. I’d taken a year off to explore southeast Asia before heading back to university. I’d signed up for a course at university but decided that I wanted a different type of challenge and it happened to coincide with my friends’ Dad requiring some help with his sustainable flooring contract business.
What does a typical day involve?
We have a rather enthusiastic dog that likes to make sure that I’m up at the crack of dawn. Then it’s on the train to our Clerkenwell showroom to sort out samples for the day. It normally starts off with a meeting in the showroom in the morning, followed by a lunch and learn where we discuss projects and new ranges. While it may sound quite straightforward, every day is different and I like that – the A&D sector is an ever-changing environment.
What can architects, interior designers and specifiers expect from you?
I always give good and honest technical knowledge to really help them understand how their choice of floor will affect their project. I’ve always taken a consultative approach and step away from the greenwashing that has taken us away from real discussions on sustainability.
Do you have a favourite IVC Commercial product at the moment?
That’s a tough one as there’s always new products being launched. Right now, I’d say it would have to be the Imperfection carpet tile range. Imperfection is a versatile product which gives designers control over the finish and style while offering a sustainable option with Econyl® 100% regenerated nylon. I also like our Moduleo Roots Galtymore Oak LVT for its versatility and nod towards biophilic design.
So, what’s next?
Well, I’m prepping for Dad duties as we have our first baby due in November, so nursery furniture seems to be top of the list. Apart from that, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next when it comes to sustainability and the flooring industry. Oh, and seeing how Spurs perform this season.
